Roughly twenty years ago, Robert A. Henry founded Houston Ebony Opera Guild as a platform for talented, classically trained African-American singers. Driven by a strong desire to see more viable avenues for African-American singers, the company has grown into a lasting institution for performing classical and contemporary works by African-American composers as well as the entrenched operatic works that make opera the most venerable theatrical artform we have today. Embracing more and more challenging works and holding true to the soul of Negro spirituals, HEOG is a shining hope for aspiring African-American singers that their gifts will be nurtured and not go unsung.
